On June 19, 2003 (Singapore time), APRU held a milestone meeting of the presidents of APRU universities via Internet videoconferencing.
28 presidents from 14 economies in the Pacific Rim were connected in real-time on Internet-2, the advanced Internet platform for the educational community.
Scoring a historic first for APRU, this meeting was the result of the international collaborative efforts of the technical teams at the APRU universities led by the National University of Singapore (NUS). The NUS Center for Instructional Technology coordinated the video conference, providing for technical arrangements and support for this large scale virtual meeting.
In an important move at the meeting, the APRU members voted for the association to be registered as a legal entity in Singapore. This is a significant first step towards the formation of the permanent secretariat in Singapore.
Among the many business issues discussed at the meeting, the APRU presidents also elected the new members to the steering committee. The APRU Steering Committee provides the leadership to the grouping.
