Fudan University will be hosting APRU’s inaugural undergraduate summer program in Shanghai from July 24 to August 4, 2006. Based on the theme “Introduction to Modern China”, the two-week APRU Undergraduate Summer Program is tailored for undergraduates who have a keen interest in China. |

2nd APRU/AEARU Earthquake Hazards Research Symposium Osaka University and University of California, Berkeley, will be co-hosting the 2nd APRU/AEARU Research Symposium on “Earthquake Hazards Around the Pacific Rim – Global Watch and Environmental Impact” in San Francisco (USA) from April 21 to 22, 2006. Both faculty and students are welcome to participate in the symposium. Registration is now open till March 15, 2006. Interested participants can contact Professor Yoshikatsu Murooka of Osaka University San Francisco Center (USA) at: info@osaka-u-sf.org for registration and other queries. 7th Doctoral Students Conference The 7th APRU Doctoral Students Conference (DSC) will be hosted by National University of Singapore (NUS) from July 17 to 21, 2006. DSC 2006 on “Inventing the Future: Trends, Perspectives and Enterprise from the Pacific Rim” aims to explore ways in which academic research can contribute towards inventing a future that benefits the community and the world. No registration fee is required and free accommodation for participants will be provided at NUS residence. Participating students are also encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to take part in the “APRU Enterprise Business Plan Competition – Extra Chapter Challenge (ECC)”, which will be held concurrently with the conference. Brain and Mind Research Symposium 2006 University of Sydney will be hosting a symposium on “Brain and Mind Research” from August 13 to 16, 2006. The aim of this symposium is to illuminate the scope of brain research in the Asia-Pacific region. Alongside the work of the Brain and Mind Research Institute of University of Sydney, brain researchers from various parts of the world will discuss specific plans to optimize brain research in the region at the research symposium. Interested participants are encouraged to register early to enjoy special rates. 7th APRU Fellows Program to Focus On Regional Security and Governance Based on the theme “Regional Security and Governance”, the 7th APRU Fellows Program (AFP) will be hosted by Australian National University (ANU) from August 16 to 25, 2006. Participants can expect to be engaged in stimulating discussions as well as visits to places such as the Australian Parliament House and ANU Coastal Research Station. Each member university can send up to two fellows to AFP 2006. Participating fellows are invited to collaborate and submit relevant research papers for the APRU Collaborative Research Paper Award. A peer review panel will be set up to shortlist papers that are deemed suitable for publication, and fellows whose papers are short-listed will share an award of US$6,000. |

Besides lectures in areas such as politics, economy, culture and society of China, participants will also be introduced to the Chinese culture with daily Chinese language lessons as well as field studies and visits to cultural venues in and near Shanghai. Each APRU member university can send up to two undergraduates to participate in this program. Application is now open till May 12, 2006. No registration fee is required and free accommodation on Fudan University’s campus will be provided for participants. |

The first “APRU Business Plan Competition – Extra Chapter Challenge (ECC)” will take place concurrently with the 7th Doctoral Students Conference (DSC) at National University of Singapore from July 17 to 21, 2006. An initiative driven by the APRU Doctoral Students Network (DSN) and APRU Enterprise, |

doctoral students are encouraged to write an extra chapter in their dissertations on how their research output can be commercialized. Students will present their work in front of an international panel comprising distinguished and prominent members of the venture capital community, industry leaders and other experts. |

The competition is open to doctoral students in any discipline from all APRU member universities. The top three winners will share the prize money of approximately US$20,000. |

APRU Senior Staff to Engage Top Chinese Universities in Forum Peking University will be hosting APRU’s 3rd Senior Staff Meeting in Beijing from March 8 to 10, 2006. Some 30 top Chinese universities are expected to participate in the one-day forum on “New Horizons in China’s Higher Education Sector: Global Strategies and Research Innovations” on March 9. The forum presents an excellent opportunity for APRU’s senior staff to interact with leaders from Chinese universities and gain a deeper understanding of the Chinese higher education landscape. Senior staff will discuss APRU initiatives and directions on the following day. More information will be made available on APRU website in due course. |

APRU Presidents to Meet With Prominent Asia Pacific Business Leaders Hosted by University of Sydney, the 10th Annual Presidents Meeting will take place from June 22 to 24, 2006. Prominent business leaders will be invited to speak at the forum focusing on University-Industry Interfaces and Paradigm Shifts in Science and Technology on June 23. In addition to having an opportunity to engage in stimulating discussion with business leaders, participating university presidents will also be invited to a reception with the Governor of New South Wales. CASE Singapore 2006 An international Conference for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) would be convened in Singapore from March 1 to 3, 2006. 3rd APMEC 2006: Asia Pacific Medical Education Conference The 3rd Asia Pacific Medical Education Conference (APMEC) would be conducted at National University of Singapore from February 18 to 21, 2006. A panel of distinguished scholars in medical education would be invited to the conference to touch on the trends, innovations, priorities and strategies of the sector.
